ILSA is now accepting nominations for the 2024 Student Deak Award. The Student Deak Award is sponsored by Oxford University Press for the best international law student article in a student-edited law journal. The award honors Francis Deak, a WWII veteran who wrote extensively on international law. The award is the student equivalent of the prize separately awarded by the American Journal of International Law to a younger author for meritorious scholarship in the prior year’s volume of the Journal. The Jessup 2024 Basic Materials are now available on our Competitors page under “Jessup Problem and Basic Materials” and on your team homepages. These basic materials are intended to serve as the starting point for your Jessup 2024 research. However, teams are encouraged to conduct research beyond these basic materials. In a change of practice from previous years, ILSA will not be issuing a second batch of Basic Materials; instead, we will update this list from time to time. We encourage all teams to visit the basic materials page frequently to make sure that you have the latest materials. On August 17, 10am EST, ILSA will be hosting “Artificial Intelligence: Strategies for Effective Legal Research” on our Facebook and YouTube channel. Daniel Schwarcz from the University of Minnesota Law School will be giving advice on how teams can use AI most effectively during Jessup 2024. Prof Schwarcz has written extensively about the intersection of AI and law, including in the forthcoming paper AI Tools for Lawyers: A Practical Guide. The Jessup 2024 Official Rules are now available for download! Make sure to read them closely so that you understand how the Jessup competition works and don’t make any mistakes throughout your Jessup journey. To help returning Jessupers understand the changes, we’ve also prepared a short summary of the changes to the rules from last year. The final Student Director to join the ILSA Board for 2023-2024 needs no introduction. Larissa Rebello, a fifth-year law student from Brazil, is returning for her second tour as a Student Director. Having competed in the Jessup as a first-year student, Larissa was inspired to pursue a career in International Law. Since that time, her commitment and interest has only grown stronger, and we are thrilled to welcome her back.

Smriti R. Saroja joins the ILSA Board of Directors as one of our newest Student Directors. In the final year of her legal studies at Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law University in India, she participated in Jessup 2023 and qualified for the Round of 32 at the White & Case International Rounds. Smriti now looks to strengthen her relationship with ILSA by embarking on a new chapter as a Student Director. Passionate about Public International Law, she hopes to increase the engagement among young legal minds around the world and is excited to be a part of ILSA’s vibrant community.
